York Stag Night – Revel Like Medieval Princes
When it comes to destinations for a stag night, York should be on your shortlist. With more pubs per square mile than any other town in England, you would be insane to celebrate anywhere else.
There was no better time in human history than the medieval period. A time when stags would get together to eat and drink like kings, bludgeon each other in the name of honour, and bag a few fair maidens.
The bludgeoning may have stopped, but stags still enjoy the same rowdy entertainment that has been around for centuries. To this day, York remains a “medieval” themed city, as fascinating in history as it is lively in fun.
Known as the “City of Festivals”, York has loads to choose from. So much in fact that you might end up seeing at least one festival no matter what season you travel. Some of the most popular festivals include the Viking Festival, the Roman Festival, the Ghost Festival, the Festival of Angels, the Jazz Festival and the Ebor Race Meeting.
Being in full stag mode, you’re not going to be overly interested in the museums or the galleries, though you still may wish to check out York Dungeon. This is a former dungeon and is advertised as “not for the faint hearted or young children.”
They say York has one pub for every day of the year. At least 365 pubs? You better get started drinking early then. Look for pubs and bars by area. Micklegate is recognised for its youthful stag nights. Things get rowdy around here and parties stay late so be warned! Coney Street has a more upscale clientèle, while the Goodramgate – Swinegate area has a nice mix of bars, from the traditional to the swish.
Some of the most popular pubs include:
- The Brigantes – renouned for its foreign beer
- The Charles XII – a budget venue filled with brimming student life
- KoKo International Bar – serving ten rare imported lagers and ales
- The underground Lendal Cellars off St. Helen’s Square
- The Roman Baths Inn in St. Sampson’s Square – has the remains of a real roman bath
For some top nightclubs, try:
- Old Orleans on Low Ousegate
- Biltmore on Swinegate (if you have masses of stag feed on you)
- The Bedroom on Micklegate (which has one thing on its mind)
- The always-bustling Evil Eye on Stonegate
York is a ferocious array of history, drinking and leisure. It gets no better than this, unless you’re nobility. Come see for yourself!
