Good bars/restuarants in Boston, MA?
I am traveling with a friend to Boston in 2009, and I would like to know some good places to have a meal and a drink. Looking for everything from restaurants to bars/pubs etc. I’m pretty laid back so not really intersted in expensive cocktail lounges or anything, I’m more into a good cheeseburger and a pint of some good beer or a bloody mary. I already know about Cheers or whatever, I’m looking for something a little less touristy and little more where locals would go for a good meal/drink. Safe areas too, as we are two women traveling together and don’t want to end up in bad parts of town or anything. Thanks for any and all info!
It depends where you’re staying. But I just got back from Boston and found a few places I thought were good:
Parrish Cafe on Newbury just off Arlington ($10-15) and it seemed to be a great place for locals to get together to socialize. It’s a cute pub style place but surprisingly good.
Chinatown: Anything Zagat-rated. I went once last year and saw someone else’s dinner being fished out of the tank, and was really grossed out. This time, we stopped into Xinh Xinh on Beach Street, and tried one of their specials, the seafood hot pot. It was fabulous!
If you want Asian/sushi, there’s Typhoon Asian Bistro on Boylston just off Exeter that was definitely decent.
I hope these can be a good start! Walking around Boston you should be able to find some restaurants. Not everything is PF Changs of Legal Seafood (though there are 5 of them).
As for walking around, stay out of the Boston Commons at night. There tend to be a lot of homeless in the park and it is pretty dark. When walking, stay on the streets that are the best lit, and always know where the closest subway stop is! It’s also good to program the phone number of the cab company into your phone before you go!
Metro Cab of Boston is 617-782-5500.
Taking the MBTA is extremely safe and I would definitely recommend buying a pass for however long you’re there so that you can hop on and off the trains to visit different neighborhoods in the same day easily.
Happy travels! I hope I’m of some help!
