Night clubs in the U.S?

I just moved to Memphis, TN from Jounieh, Lebanon. Back at home I watched the movie “Studio 54″ and thought man, I wish i could go clubbing like this. Well in Lebanon there are hundreds of amazing clubs, and I came to Memphis and a lot of them that I went to was not very good. Well, some friends of mine from the university took me to “backstreet club” in Memphis, and there was a huge “Studio 54″ sign hanging above. I got really excited when I saw it and was dancing and having a lot of fun. But many people were doing drugs inside that really turned me off, do all the clubs here have drugs circulating like ecstasy and cocaina? This was the primary drug going around.

Hi Georges, and welcome to the USA, though I don’t live there anymore.

Studio 54 is a long gone Disco era that will probably never come back. In those days (1975-1985), it was all so new, but I have to tell you that even then, people were full of drugs and alcohol, and had multiple sex partners – which is one of the causes of AIDS. Clubs like Studio 54 are a thing of the past, and people have missed it! I know because I was there many, many times. The movie was nothing in comparison to the real live action that was going on there.

Yes, young Americans tend to think that it is impossible to have fun in a nightclub without drugs. The two you’ve described are the ones most used because they give you enough energy to keep you going all night long. Unlike the Middle Eastern who knows that a good strong black coffee, e.g. Lebanese/Turkish/Espresso will give just as much energy without getting addicted, many young Americans don’t know how to have good clean fun. They have plenty of time to find stimulation in all the wrong places because they don’t know any better.

These problems come from suppressed feelings, which are thought in the USA from a very young age. You will notice with time that many Americans seem to be very happy and nice on the outside, but full of anger on the inside. Because in America it is important to always be nice and polite and almost perfect, and many feel they need to find a different outlet for their real feelings. Many times drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling and other forms of risk-taking become that outlet.

There is also great pressure about physical appearance and sexual performance. This is why everyone is at the gym trying to create a perfect body, and dancing provocatively at the clubs. You can see it on MTV, everyone needs to be famous and rich and cause envy and jealousy. In the USA, you are also not allowed to get old or look older. For this reason, you will see many people with all types of plastic surgery. For a woman it is even worse – the breasts must be big too, and you have to look 20 even if you’re 80 years old.

These are some of the reasons why I ran away from the USA.
As you continue to live in the USA, you will learn more and more.

Sincerely, Ms. Miche
