Asian Club in my school?
I am planning on starting an Asian Club in my school (in Nashville, TN) but I am not so sure what our goal will be or what we might do. I was thinking we could watch anime together, cook Asian food and have like a party together, learn to dance Asian dance. I was also thinking we can learn more of our own cultures through presentations but I am not sure if it will all work out or not. If there is anyone who has Asian Club in their school please tell me how it is! I would probably welcome anyone to join but I am really just worry about how it would turn out. By the way, I am a senior this year so if I start it, I wonder if they will still keep it for the next few years. HELP!???!!!!
I did not take part in an Asian Club (there never was one in my school) but I was head for the Multicultural Club. You can also watch Asian dramas (not only anime). Some good ones are: My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, My Girl, and many others. mysoju.com is a really good source for Asian movies and dramas. Also, look up different Asian holidays or festivals. Then on that day, dress up in the traditional dress of that Asian culture, and do whatever they do on that day. For example, Japan had cherry blossom festivals where the girls wear summer kimonos and walk along parks that have cherry blossom trees in full bloom. New Years is a really good one (Chinese New Years, that is). There are many possibilities. Also, as a group, you can all pick one Asian language you all want to learn, and then practice it together. It’s even better if a few of you can already speak it to teach the others. It’s a fun way to bond.
You can set up a day where everyone dresses in Asian cultural clothing and brings cultural foods to eat and watch an Asian movie set in the years of samurais, ninjas, Emperors, etc.
In order to keep the group going, you need to find younger students who really enjoy the club. Ask them if they’d be interested in being head next year and advise them on how to do so. Tell them how to get younger people to keep it going when they leave.
