Byron is great for backpackers. There is heaps to do there – if you like drinking and the beach. You can also go scuba diving at Julian Rocks, one of the top ten dive sites in the world. There are a few pubs there, loads of touristy shops (it is much more mainstream now than it was fifteen years ago), there are heaps of backpacker accommodations, and there is pretty much one main street with a few side streets here and there with interesting stuff in them. The Great Northern (pub) has live bands playing, and sometimes often popular ones. There is also a great market in Byron sometimes, but i’m not sure how often.
It is a great place, but more commercialised than it used to be. It is certainly worth a visit, and the Gold Coast is only one hour drive up the coast in QLD.
